Star Trek: Let’s Kill it Already

By stephanie - Monday, July 24th, 2006

So apparently J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) is set to produce the next Star Trek film, which will take place at Starfleet Academy, with Matt Damon (!!!) playing a young Captain Kirk.

OK…I like Matt Damon…but as Captain Kirk? Young Kirk at Starfleet Academy? With Spock? I am saying this as a Trek fan of 20 years: Can we just kill the franchise already? Please? You are destroying all my good Star Trek mojo here. Ouch.

Great article! Star Trek has some major franchise fatigue….Matt Damon (inspite of the Shat’s blessing) is a mistake along with the whole project.

As bizarre as it might sound, keep an open mind. I never thought Smallville would fly (pun intended), but that might be my all-time favorite Superman show.

So, with Star Trek and a young Kirk, it could happen. (Now I’ll say it and try to really believe it–hahah). It could happen!

For it to work, you would need unknown or at least relatively unknowns as the main characters. Could be a good poll, who would be a good young Kirk……

I would agree with that, which is why I think Damon is a poor choice. I liked who they got for young Darth Vadar…though Ewan McGregor didn’t bother me as young Obi Wan…I actually thought McGregor was the perfect choice for that role.

[...] As I’ve already commented here briefly, my answer is no. [...]
