The Island: An Underrated Box Office Bomb That Deserved Better
By stephanie - Thursday, August 3rd, 2006
When I finally caught The Island on DVD, I was surprised at how good it was, considering how poorly it did at the box office. It’s got action, suspense, nifty special effects, a bit of a twist, and two extremely good-looking stars, Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, wearing very tight costumes.
All that, and Steve Buscemi. I mean, c’mon now! Steve Buscemi!
Now…we’ve seen some of the sci-fi concepts before in other guises. But the central premise is fresh in its delivery and serves as a very good commentary on the direction the medical profession is heading. While some of the action sequences are a bit over the top, they are still quite fun. With so much going for it, I can’t quite figure out why this didn’t do better at the box office. It wasn’t perfect, but then again, have you seen Spider-Man 2? Yick.
I won’t get into any more details than that, so as not to spoil it. Once you’ve seen The Island, you might want to read this very politicized but glowing review from Mike Adams, who writes a lot on the medical industry and “Big Pharma.”

The Island was Ok in a very OK kind of way. Yes, Scarlet is stunning but it isn’t enough to make this movie anything other than OK. The names sound like a rip off from Logan Run, as the plot kinda is as well. It looked Ok, some nice explosions etc…. but at the end of the day, it wasn’t a movie that got me excited, wanted to own on DVD or anything……..
