I Can’t Quite Get Past the Toaster…

I’m finally catching up with episodes from the first season of the new Battlestar Galactica. In many ways, it’s a very well-done show. (And hey, what a concept – science fiction with some real acting in it.) But it’s the excessive parallels with earth life that still bug me. For example, Helo is back on the planet Caprica, hiding from some Cylons. He’s with the “other” Boomer, and volunteers to make some toast.
Toast? On Caprica? I guess they’ve evolved to be exactly like Americans.
A critical part of the plot revolves around the Cylons hearing the two pieces of toast pop up in the toaster.
On the one hand, it was kind of exciting, but on the other…I couldn’t help but think…why do they have a replica of a 1950s toaster on Caprica, on the other side of the galaxy…???
Maybe I’m too literal-minded.

Yeah, the lack of a real futuristic or alien culture is a major flaw of the show. You knew that was going to be a problem from the start when the producers thought that it was a “good idea” to use minutes and seconds instead of centons and microns.
