Doctor Who States Premiere and Sarah Jane Spin-Off Show

Doctor Who season two is premiering in the states tonight on the SciFi Channel; in case you missed it, I had already reviewed the episode back in April. (I don’t live in the U.K., but I have my ways of getting my grubby little hands on things…)
In other Who news, Elisabeth Sladen will reprise her role as investigative journalist, Sarah Jane Smith, in a new Doctor Who spin-off series. I thought she was great when she returned to Doctor Who, so the show should be good. It’s also nice to see an older woman getting a show like this – in the U.S. they would have set the show back in time and gotten a younger actress, probably. Looking forward to it.

What with this new show, the “Torchwood” spin-off, and the ongoing Dr. Who, it’s starting to look a bit like the Trek franchise – and we all know how badly that declined.
Still, we’re one episode off the end of Season 2 in NZ and I’m throughly enjoying it. I loved the return of Sarah Jane – one of my all-time favourite Dr Who characters, and the continuation of narrative arcs through seasons is nice. I wish at times though that the stories could be strung out a bit – I miss my 4 half-hour episodes per plot – and I’d like a bit more time and geographic travel to others bits of Earth’s history. Contemporary stories every now and then – just not every second week or so. It’s a programme about a Time Lord, after all.
