Walt's dog may actually be the smoke monster changing its form. The smoke monster is able to scan people's minds by taking "snapshots" of them (you saw the flashes when Kate and the Other gal were chased by the monster). The Others used the smoke monster in friendly dog form to go around the camp and lick faces, etc. to get data on all the survivors - including things that NO ONE woudl know unless they read minds. My buddy clued me to this one when he noted that in Season 1, episode 1, just before the pilot was yanked out of the cockpit and killed - the only "person" who saw Jack head into the forest...was the dog. They made a point to linger on the dog in a wide shot after they disappeared into the forest. The dog shows up at very odd moments - usually out of the forest. Answer any questions?
