Battlestar Galactica: Thoughts on the Last Episodes

By stephanie - Monday, January 19th, 2009

It took me a while to get into the new Battlestar Galactica. I did no t initially like the dark flavor of the show, and some of the obvious Americanisms have bugged me and kept me from fully getting into the BSG universe. It wasn’t until last season that I found myself getting “hooked” on it. One weekend when I needed a break, I sat and watched BSG for two days straight. While there are still a few things about the show that keep this from being an all-time favorite, I do find many aspects of the plot and arching storyline to be quite fascinating and compelling.

(Caution: BIG spoilers from here on out!)

So I was definitely looking forward to the latest episode on Friday night. This is the first of the last episodes. The last remaining humans have landed on “Earth” and have found it desolated from some sort of nuclear holocaust. Here are the major revelations from the episode:

1. We find that Starbuck really did die, and whoever is living as Starbuck now is some sort of replica or regenerated version of her, like the resurrected Cylons.

2. Earthlings weren’t human; they were Cylons.

3. The Final Five are reincarnations of people who died on Earth during the nuclear holocaust.

4. Tigh’s wife is one of the Final Five (but we do not know yet if she has been or will be resurrected).

Immediate questions that came to my mind were centered around Earth and what it really was. Was the Earth they found supposed to be the same “Earth” that we call home? Or is it another planet or an Earth from an alternate reality? (Yes, I know it’s a TV show, but were the writers trying to suggest that in this fictional narrative, we humans are actually descendants of robots?)

What mechanism resurrected Starbuck? Is it something that is connected with the planet that her plane took a nose-dive in (and is there some sort of wormhole from that planet that goes to Earth)?

How did the Cylons get to Earth in the first place if they didn’t even exist back then (supposedly)?

I’m looking forward to the answers to these questions and curious to see how they wrap the show up. I hope that in the end we get a satisfying resolution and don’t get left hanging with a bunch of loose ends like in the X-Files. But it seems they are leading up to something big, and if so, it’s sure to be good.

Tigh’s wife was resurected just before the resurections ship was destroyed, wasn’t she? Also, I think it was the real Earth, but in the past. When Gallactica jumped during the battle in the astroid field, it jumped into the singularity (black hole) and went back in time.
