Closet Sci-Fi Geek
About
I started this blog a few years ago to have an outlet for my interest in science fiction. See, none of my friends were really that into it (not even my boyfriends). I guess in some respects that made me a “Closet Sci-Fi Geek.”
Science fiction fans are often stereotyped as being young males with pimples, glasses, and a horrible fashion sense. Now, there’s nothing wrong with being a dyed-in-the-wool geek. (In school, I was a young female with pimples, glasses, and a horrible fashion sense - though to my defense, it was the 1980s.) But science fiction fans cross all barriers of gender, race, age and social ranks.
Even though science fiction and fantasy is quite popular now (look at the success of Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and all the superhero movies out lately), it’s still not “cool” to be really into sci-fi. I’ve felt that people (often the men I was dating!) would look at me a little funny when they found out I liked sci-fi and video games…as if that was something strange or bizarre. With that in mind, it just became something I didn’t advertise. Not that I was totally ashamed, but I just kept it to myself.
Maybe it’s time, however, for us sci-fi fans to come out of the closet as it were!
Thus, the name of this blog: “Closet Sci-Fi Geek.” Enjoy.
